2027 Municipal Elections, Sala Looks Into Crystal Ball: “Complicated Alliances on the Left”

Milan, May 11, 2025 – The puzzle of alliances in the center-left in the 2027 municipal elections. Mayor Giuseppe Sala makes it clear that the composition of the progressive coalition that will present itself for the challenge of Palazzo Marino is not a given. Of course, he, already in his second term, will not be able to run again, but he analyzes the possible scenarios, starting from Carlo Calenda's "threat" to present a mayoral candidate branded Azione : "It would be a great advantage if the left could all stay together, but it is not easy. The season of development, urban regeneration and internationalization of Milan that my two governments have embodied is not liked by everyone. I do not know if the entire left wants to respect the work that has been done in recent years. All this will also affect the presence or not of the more centrist, moderate and liberal-democratic wing in the coalition ", the one represented by Calenda's party.
Sala insists: “What the coalition on the left will be is not a simple synthesis , which I hope will be found. Now it is early, but there is a lot of work to do”. The mayor says that “it is early” and also indicates the moment in which to decide who the mayoral candidates will be, on the left and on the right: “ The right moment is after the 2026 Olympics (the Games will last from 6 to 22 February, ed. ). There could be an election day in May 2027: there will be elections for the general and administrative elections in the large municipalities including Milan. Even the fact that there is an election day could influence the alliances in the centre-left ”. In what way? “The M5S has not been part of the last Milanese councils. But if in 2027 there is a coalition between the PD and the M5S at a national level, can we assume that at the Milanese level the alliances will be different? Probably not”.
An alliance, between the Dems and the Five Star Movement , that Sala does not seem to look favorably on at the Milanese level: "If the intent is destructive with respect to the policies of recent years in our city, it would be a problem". The number one at Palazzo Marino hits the nail on the head: "I remember the nostalgics of Varesine (the former Luna Park in Milan in whose area Porta Nuova with the Unicredit and Bosco Verticale skyscrapers arose in the 2000s, ed. ). There is a soul of the city that thinks that doing nothing is better . I do not embody it".
A poll by FI, meanwhile, shows that Democrat Pierfrancesco Majorino is ahead of journalist Mario Calabresi by 4 points as the center-left candidate for mayor. “I don’t comment on the polls,” Sala replies. “But there are still chances that the center-left will win. Since I’ve been mayor (2016, ed. ), the center-left has won all the elections in the city, not just the municipal ones, but also the European and regional ones. Calabresi? I haven’t made any endorsements. But when they asked me, a few months ago, if Calabresi could be a good candidate, I said yes. As I would say about other names. Whether Calabresi wants to make himself available and is able to convince the electorate, I don’t know. I hope there is a strong candidate for mayor on the left but also on the right .”
The last joke is about the Champions League final between Inter and PSG: “ Will I go to Monaco to see the match? I think so but I have to convince Chiara (Bazoli, the mayor's partner, ed. )”, smiles Sala, a true Nerazzurri fan.
